Birendra Pani: Urban Avatara, a New Mythopoesis

July 8 to July 26, 2020

Fresh Paint Gallery is delighted to announce a special limited engagement solo show by Indian artist Birendra Pani.  Born in Odisha, Pani lives and works in New Delhi.  He holds a BFA from the renowned Kala Bhavan, Visva Bharati University of Santi Niketan and an MFA from M.S. University, Vadodara.  His work is much sought-after by collectors and has appeared in over 300 exhibitions in India and abroad – including in Paris, Tokyo, Cairo, New York, London, Hong Kong, Dubai and Zurich.  Pani has worked in many different media, including photography, printmaking, mixed media and installation work, and lists among his influences folk art, dance, yoga, the traditional Pattachitra miniature painting of his native Odisha, and Pop Art.  His work is known for its bright colors and playful images, however it has a distinctly serious intent.  The acrylic on canvas works in Urban Avatara address the contradictions of consumer culture and the neglect of local place, culture, history, memory, and identity in contemporary times.  At times these two strands stand distinctly apart, at others they coalesce to create a new ‘mythopoesis’ through visual language.
